Northern Shade by the New Haven Independent

Northern Shade by the New Haven Independent

Very excited to be a part of the talented team of Northern Shade, written and directed by Chris Rucinski.

Spent my preparation in tactical training with our veteran military consultant, learning about US veteran life, the ongoing opioid epidemic, and the imperfect relationship between the US police force and the citizens its meant to protect.

While anxious to balance Covid-19 safety with the highly collaborative work of our industry, I’m quite excited to play a character with so much diversity.

Summer 2020, or whatever you need to call it

We weren’t ready for this. I certainly wasn’t. This is a time of great change, and it is going to hurt, because change does often hurt. The greatest hope is that we use our voices to encourage change for the better and be examples of the better, more compassionate, more humane world. Artists are good at feeling pain and using it for creativity and innovation, so let us find ways to help everyone else do so too. #blacklivesmatter #bethechangeyouwishtosee

I wasn’t really here for March — but since early April, I’ve been taking steps to keep my soul and spirit alive. I’ve been spending my time in quarantine in Brooklyn learning new skills: Duolingo, Masterclass, and Harvard’s online edx are my new friends; interacting digitally with my community: so grateful for workshops with Actors Launchpad, theatre chat groups watching productions on YouTube, fellow artists willing to explore scenework and character over Zoom; writing: joined a writing group and it’s encouraging me to finish several screenplays - features and webisodes/miniseries; and learning more about representation and the future of my industry.

Sadly, in light of covid-19 restrictions, Summer 2020’s productions with Breckenridge Backstage Theatre have been cancelled. We received healthy communication from the artistic team and I fully support their decision to protect their community and everyone involved, but I still made space for myself to bid farewell to an opportunity lost. I am honoured to have been cast as Helena (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) and Prentiss (Peter and the Starcatcher), I hope to see you again in a brighter healthier better future!

Performance: St Lucy of the Eyes

Excited to be collaborating again with smw in a staged reading of a new play, “St Lucy of the Eyes.”

Opens at 7pm, Monday, November 11th at The Wild Project, 195 E 3rd St, NY NY 10009.

Sex. Violence. Scandal. Murder. Power. 1930’s Hollywood has it ALL.
St. Lucy of the Eyes, written by (smw), is a brave, humorous, and frightening look into the institutionalized violence towards, and marginalization of, women. A brilliant, timely play seen through the lens of Hollywood’s Golden Age.

Directing/Choreographing, NACHMOx

One week, three dancers, countless possibilities. I have been welcomed to choreograph a piece for 2019’s National Choreographer’s Month, Performance at the Tank Theatre in NYC. Myself and a handful of other choreographers will be presenting a one-hour show of new works created from the prompt “chance” on July 17th at 7pm.

There will be a talkback after the show to discuss our respective processes. TICKETS

NACHMOx is your condensed choreographic kick in the pants that happens four times a year at The Tank NYC. The rules are simple: choreographer and dancers sign up, pair up and create up a brand new dance in a week! The same way that the creators are taking a chance on this process, we hope that you the audience will join us and learn more about the art and science of chance during this special performance!

Acting in an Art Film

Excited to be able to share this footage from Flight Over Wasteland, performed live at the Knockdown Center and adapted for film. Directed and adapted by artist Liliya Lifanova from TS Eliot’s poem The Wasteland, filmed by Yoni Goldstein.

This teaser for the film, which debuted this year at the Anthology Film Archives, introduces Philomela, with choreography co-developed with Davy Bisaro, combining delicate and agonizing movements to illustrate her desperate message and inability to speak.

Philomela, the Flight Woman in Eliot’s poem, comes from the Greek story of King Pandion’s daughters who were transformed into the nightingale (Philomela) and the swallow (Procne), to escape Procne’s husband Tereus after he brutally raped Philomela and tore out her tongue so she could tell no one of his wickedness against her.

I had the pleasure of reading the novel in 2018 and speaking extensively with Sean regarding concepts for an adaptation for a story that feels part Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, part War of the Worlds, part Shaun of the Living Dead, all historical comedy. I’m so excited that we are bringing it to life!

Development: Two Sisters and a Piano

I’m very excited to begin exploring the character of Sofia in Nilo Cruz’s beautiful play, Two Sisters and a Piano at the Actors Studio in New York! Blessed to be joined by Jillian K Waters, and fellow Actors Studio Drama School colleagues Ricardo Montt and Cihangir Duman.

One of the best parts about this heartbreaking and glorious play, is it is an open door to a magical land full of rich history, triumph, turmoil, obsession, fantasy, love, music, celebration, betrayal, ambition, revolution, mystery, broken dreams, and freedom.

Performance: If Women Rose Rooted

“The more you know of your history, the more liberated you are.” - Maya Angelou

In the Otherworld, the land of the fairy folk, wisdom is possessed by women. One day, the Queen of the fairies sent out a call to women around the world to come to the Otherworld and receive the gift of that great wisdom.

‘if women rose rooted' is a piece that explores the femininity and culture through the wisdom shared by those who came before us, and through our experiences today. Drawn from mythology and folklore, coupled with the personal experiences, ‘if women rose rooted’ tells a story that is both empowering and moving.

Director: Melissa Mowry, Assistant Director: Jessica Fichter

"Family ... Tradition ... Revenge

After the death of her father, and the murder of her mother, a young woman finds herself at the head of her family, unsure of who to trust. Inspired by the Greek Myths surrounding the Trojan War, 'Revenge' is a story that brings the thrill and drama of a mobster film, through the eyes of female a protagonist and antagonist.

'Revenge' follows two extremely independent and strong women who have risen through the ranks within their very influential families. These women are rich and complex, both loving and cruel and desire nothing more than to protect the honor and dignity to their family names.  Stories such as these are not often told through the female gaze, but rather through the experience on the tough mob boss male archetype. We want, as storytellers to challenge that image, and to expand the world of the female character, and create more opportunities of characters like this to exist."

I'm excited to be involved in bringing this story to life and explore the challenging histories of Greek Tragedy and the American Mob Wars. This is a story dear to me, having written it with great sensitivity to the time and place in which honor and family can override the morals of "justice."

Produced by Secret6Train Productions, a female-founded independent production company.

Now I embark upon my third and final year of training in the Stanislavski method, championed by actors and artist members of the Actors Studio in New York and Los Angeles. These past couple years have been part of an incredible journey of personal growth, knowledge, curiosity, exploration of spirit, and deeply human challenges. As I continue this journey and prepare for my departure (which seems sooner than I may feel "safe" about), I aspire to continue to possess the level of exploration and curiosity that I have learned is essential to the most important element of my craft as an actor: the ability to reach into my personal depths and connects truthfully and honestly to all that is human.
